Wild Finishes Highlight Week 11 At Sandia Speedway
Eric Romero, Isaac Sherman, and Robert Moharter hung on for
close wins as wild finishes dominated the night at Sandia Speedway. 50 cent hot
dog night and the celebrity race were supposed to be the theme of the evening,
but it was the thrilling finishes that got the crowd buzzing.
The bandoleros were the first class on the track as the59
of CJ Wilson jumped out to the lead. The 88 of Joshua Jackson took over the lead
from Wilson at the end of lap 1. The 67 of Nick Jansson brought out the yellow
with a mechanical failure on lap 2 and the 9 of Shelby Wilson took over the top
spot on the restart. The 37 of Ryan Cansdale passed Jackson and Wilson on the
high side and went on to victory. Shelby Wilson was second followed by Joshua
Jackson and CJ Wilson.
The Main event for the bandoleros saw the 37 of Ryan
Cansdale take the lead from the pole position and cruise to victory. The 11 year
old from Laguna Beach California was followed by the 88 of Joshua Jackson, the
59 of CJ Wilson, and the 67 of Nick Jansson.
The 89 of Steve Kapinski took the lead in the the hobby
stock heat race at the drop of the green flag. The 87 of Robert Kapinski moved
in behind him and gave chase. The 14 of Bobby Sandy moved up to second with 3
laps to go and started to challenge for the lead. On the final lap, Sandy’s car
lost power and Steve Kapinski took the win. Robert Kapinski was second, the 95
of Kelly Medford was third, and the 46 of Matt Young was fourth.
The 89 of Steve Kapinski jumped out to the early lead in
the main event as the 14 of Bobby Sandy worked through the field to take over
second place. Sandy applied pressure throughout the race but Kapinski held on
for the win. Sandy finished second, with the 87 of Robert Kapinski third, and
the 46 of Matt Young fourth.
The first heat race for the legends saw the 03 of Isaac
Sherman squeeze through two cars to take the lead on the first lap. The 92 of
Tyler Weldon moved in behind Sherman and the 31 of Kenneth Payne moved up to
third. The top three cars finished nose to tail with Sherman taking the win,
Weldon second, Payne third, and the 7 of Matthew Cardenas finishing fourth.
The 6 of Mike Harris jumped out to the lead at the start of
the second legends heat. The 34 of Keith Schmidt applied pressure throughout the
contest, but Harris hung on for the win. Schmidt was second followed by the 23
of Antonio Cardenas and the 08 of Justin Weber.
The main event saw three wide racing at the beginning as
the 31 of Kenneth Payne took control on lap one. The 03 of Isaac Sherman made a
move for the lead on lap three, but contact sent Payne spinning. Sherman was
sent to the back of the pack. The 92 of Tyler Weldon took over the led on the
double file restart with Payne right behind. Payne finally retook the top spot
on lap 10 and raced nose to tail with Weldon for several laps. With two laps to
go contact between Payne and Weldon sent Weldon spinning. Payne was sent to the
rear as Sherman had worked all the way back up to second. Weldon took the lead
on the restart but Sherman shot under him for the lead in turn three and Weldon
spun. Sherman held the top spot on the restart but the 34 of Keith Schmidt now
pressured Sherman for the lead. Sherman held on at the end for the win as
Schmidt was second, the 08 of Justin Weber was third, and the 23 of Antonio
Cardenas finished fourth.
The first modified heat started with the 08 of Willis
Johnson jumping out to the lead. A caution came out as the 4 of former Indy car
driver Jim Guthrie and the 31 of Bruce Martin made contact in turn three sending
both cars to the pits. Johnson resumed the lead on the restart and went on to
victory. The 63 of Steve Deberry was second and the 09 of Ashley Gantt was
third.
The second modified heat saw the 5 of Bobbie Reid take the
lead at the green flag. The 87 of Robert Kapinski took over the top spot a short
time later and opened up a sizable lead. The 59 of Charlie Wilson worked his way
up to second and started to run down Kapinski. Wilson took over the lead with 4
laps to go and went on to victory. Kapinski finished second and the 7 of Mick
Jepsen was third.
The main event started with the 5 of Bobbie Reid taking the
early lead but the 59 of Charlie Wilson soon took over the top spot. The next
five cars ran nose to tail for most of the race before the 08 of Willis Johnson
passed the 31 of Bruce Martin on the high side with 6 to go. Martin and Johnson
made contact in turn one bringing out a yellow and sending Martin to the rear.
On the restart, cars went three wide into turn 3 with Johnson and the 87 of
Robert Kapinski making contact sending Johnson to the rear. After the restart,
the 4 of Jim Guthrie worked his way up to second, but the 59 of Charlie Wilson
held on for the win. Guthrie finished second, the 7 of Mick Jepsen was third,
and the 63 of Steve Deberry was fourth.
The 06 of Patricia Gallegos took the lead in the first
factory 4 heat race with the 95 of Andrew Fowner right behind her. Fowner stayed
right with her the whole race, but Gallegos hung on for the win. Fowner was
second and the 18 of David Dodge nosed out the 30 of Adrian Davis for third.
The 84 of Eric Romero jumped out to the early lead in the
second heat race and pulled away for a convincing win. The 63 of Frank Payne was
second and the 77 of Curtis Steinman was third.
The main event saw the 29 of Larry Johnson take the lead
but the 77 of Curtis Steinman took over the top spot a short time later. A red
flag came out with 16 laps to go as the 96 of Mike Lillis coasted to a stop in
the infield. He complained of chest pains and an ambulance was dispatched. He
was later reported to be conscious and alert after the race. On the restart, the
06 of Patricia Gallegos and the 84 of Eric Romero passed Steinman. Gallegos and
Romero battled hard for the top spot with Gallegos holding the advantage going
into the final lap. Romero dove under Gallegos coming out of turn 4 and took the
win by inches. Steinman was third and the 95 of Andrew Fowner was fourth.
The cruisers heat race turned out to be a battle between
the 76 of Robert Moharter and the 98 of Toy Fisher. Fisher stayed on Moharter
almost the entire race, but Moharter held on for the win. The 69 of Mike Smith
was third and the 43 of Art Hurley was fourth.
The main event was almost like the heat race with Robert
Moharter taking the lead and Toy Fisher staying right with him. The two battled
side by side for a couple of laps before Moharter pulled to the lead once again.
Fisher stayed right on his bumper but Moharter held him off for the win. The 69
of Mike Smith was third and the 43 of Art Hurley was fourth.
The X-mod heat race started with the 62 of Tom Melloy and
the 54 of Tim Hooper racing side by side. The 31 of Carla Martin spun on the
front straightaway to bring out a yellow. On the restart, Melloy and Hooper
raced side by side again before Hooper pulled away. Hooper went on to victory
followed by Melloy in second, and the 99 of Edward Chernow in third.
The main event started off with the 99 of Edward Chernow
taking the lead. He led for a few laps before the 54 of Tim Hooper slipped under
him for the top spot. Chernow stayed right with him for several laps, but Hopper
eventually pulled away for the win. Chernow was second and the 99 of Tom Melloy
was third.
The celebrity challenge featured KKOB radio host Terrie Q.
Sayre racing Brenda Gantt in cruisers. Sayre drove the 69 car of Mike Smith and
Gantt drove the 98 car of Toy Fisher. Sayre had to complete 4 laps and Gantt had
to drive 5 laps. Gantt took off at the wave of the green flag, but Sayre put the
pedal to the metal and held off Gantt for the win.
